What if you wore jeans to a music event and your date was dressed in business casual?

I felt really bad about it because all of his important friends including the music director were all dressed up in business casual/party attire. About 10% of the audience was actually in jeans like myself, mostly younger. What I chose to do was to just chat and smile and pretend like I fit in...not sure if I was that successful! They were dark jeans. What would you have done?
